Participants:
Edith Futscher is an art historian and art educator at the MUMOK and the Generali Foundation in Vienna. She teaches at the TU Wien and the Department of Art History of the University of Vienna. She currently holds an Elise Richter Scholarship from the Austrian Science Fund, for which she is working on the cinematic oeuvre of Marguerite Duras.
Ruth Noack is an art historian, curator, and author. She served as a curator at the documenta 12 in 2007 and is currently writing about Sanja Ivekovic’s work Triangle (1979).
Simon Wachsmuth studied at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and currently lives in Berlin. His works address the relationship and mutual influence between different cultures and the resulting political discourse defined by different forms.
Monika Anekle is a historian and cultural studies scholar. In 2001, she and her sisters launched the art project Schwestern Brüll. She also teaches at the University of Vienna and is an art educator at the MUMOK in Vienna.
Anton Sutterlüty studied theology, philosophy, and art history. He worked for many years as an Alpine herdsman on a mountain farm in the Austrian region of Vorarlberg. He is an art educator at the MUMOK in Vienna and the Essl Museum in Klosterneuburg. He is also a performance and vocal artist specializing in improvisation.
Bärbl Zechner is a communications curator for museums and exhibitions. She worked as an art educator at several institutions, including the MUMOK and the Generali Foundation in Vienna. She has planned and organized several interdisciplinary projects, including Denkraum Donaustadt 2004-2009. She also began working with art education "on the road" for Public Art Lower Austria in 2005.

Concept and chair: Bärbl Zechner
Under the title Das Fremde ist dem Eigenen sehr nahe (The Foreign Is Very Close To Home) Bärbl Zechner, Edith Futscher, Ruth Noak, Simon Wachsmuth, Monika Ankele, and Anton Sutterlüty will discuss different aspects and methods of art education, including in the context of public art.
In three short lectures, which are embedded in the exhibition EXTREM in the Kunstraum Niederoesterreich, the speakers will talk about their experience and ideas regarding making art more accessible to the public. The events also offer a platform for discussion, for the participants to share their different positions, and for acquiring new insights into this subject. A more distanced historical and theoretical perspective is thus compared to a personal artistic practice, while both approaches are seen in relation to a form of art education in which beholders are appealed to by making artistic methods more accessible and by speaking to their empathy and genuine interest.
The speakers also demonstrate their arguments by conducting an "educational experiment" in which the audience is encouraged to reach their own conclusions and come up with new questions while illustrating potential connections between art and its beholders.
