The temporary project STATUS QUO VADIS was initiated in a cooperation between Kunst im öffentlichen Raum Niederösterreich and the Sommerspiele Melk summer festival to mark the 50th season of the latter, which was established in 1961. Sculptures and interventions with light, sound and language were completed for the project in six installations around the town of Melk by internationally active artists and architects. The paticipants were Anna Ceeh/Salvi, Female Obsession, Eva Grubinger & Werner Feiersinger, Viktoria Tremmel & Martin Wagner, Rita Vitorelli & Dan Solbach, Dorota Walentynowicz & Herwig Weiser.
Kunst im öffentlichen Raum Niederösterreich sees itself as confronted with calls for democraticisation — one culture for all — and with the rules of the taste factions and power structures in public space. Art projects also impact on the de facto production of public space. Cultural initiatives engage with public art as a means of challenging regional cultural values.
