Kunstraum Weikendorf
In 2007, Michael Kienzer remodeled Weikendorf’s old fire station and transformed it into an exhibition space for contemporary art. Since then, this space, called Kunstraum Weikendorf, continues to host two exhibitions every year. Up until 2017, the invitations to artists to create temporary installations in the space were issued by Michael Kienzer himself or one of the several guest curators. These exhibitions last for six months and are visible from the outside of the space through a large window. Beginning in 2018, the Public Art Lower Austria panel of experts will now propose five to six artists for the half-year exhibitions. A jury that has been established by the very successful Multiple Choice art education project will then make the final selection.

Multiple Choice began as an exceptional art education and participation project in Weikendorf already in 2013. It was born out of the strong belief shared by the art educators Gabriele Stöger and Bärbl Zechner that having a say in the selection of art projects in public spaces contributes to the public developing a greater acceptance of contemporary art and thus becoming more engaged. The Multiple Choice team of jurors is made up of five people who represent the inhabitants of the town. They are responsible for the curatorial groundwork for the temporary exhibitions held in Kunstraum Weikendorf, which is smack in the middle of the community where they live and work. Each year, two of the five jurors are replaced by new members, thus giving others the chance to participate in the decision-making process. In addition to selecting an artist, the Multiple Choice team’s responsibilities entail preparing the exhibition, acquiring the necessary equipment, publishing materials, and organizing the exhibition openings. The team is supported at all times by the art educators Bärbl Zechner and Gabriele Stöger and the Department of Art in Public Space of Lower Austria. The project will be realized in cooperation with the community of Weikendorf.
